Die Entwicklung von Software erfolgt zusehends im Rahmen zwischenbetrieblicher Arbeitsteilung. Die Produktprogramme grosser Software Plattformanbieter (sog. Platform Owners) werden dabei durch Softwarelösungen von unabhängigen, oftmals kleineren Softwareanbietern ergänzt (sog. Complementors). Dies führt wiederum zur Bildung sogenannter Software Plattform Ökosysteme.
