Bachelor's and Master's Theses

We supervise students majoring in Business Administration in their Bachelor's and Master's theses on topics related to Information Systems. In your Bachelor's or Master's thesis, you will independently address an academic research question.

To write a Bachelor's thesis at the Institute of Information Systems (IWI), the introductory phase of the Bachelor's program must be completed. It is also recommended to write the thesis at the end of the Bachelor's studies and to incorporate the concepts and knowledge acquired in the related courses.

Students wishing to write a Bachelor's thesis must provide proof that they have completed their introductory studies (propädeutic phase). An example would be sending the transcript of records via email.

To be eligible to write a Master's thesis, students must have fully completed their Bachelor's degree. Additionally, they are required to have earned at least 45 ECTS credits in the Master's program before registering for the Master's thesis.

As part of the registration process for the Master's thesis, students are required to submit their Bachelor's diploma electronically. Students who do not have a recognized Business Administration major at the University of Bern, or who have not completed a substantial minor in Business Administration (60 ECTS), must also submit a placement letter. This document outlines all additional Bachelor's-level requirements that the student must fulfill. Any fulfilled requirements will be noted in the transcript of records.

We reserve the right to accept theses only within the limits of our supervision capacity.

We supervise empirical theses (gaining insights through original data collection), discursive theses (discussion of already published findings), and constructive theses (conceptualization or implementation of a solution). Collaboration with companies and other organizations (so-called practice-based theses) is possible, provided the topic is meaningful, a shared objective can be defined, and the conditions for achieving sufficient academic quality are met.

Students writing a thesis at IWI IE are also required to give a 15-minute colloquium presentation followed by a discussion and to attend at least one other colloquium session as an observer. More information about the Bachelor's and Master's colloquium can be found at the following link:

Further information on writing a thesis, which complements the WISO regulations, can be found under the section Guidelines and Templates.
